ALL unregistered subscriber identity module (Sim) cards of people living in urban centres should be now deactivated, according to Information, Communication Technology Minister Timothy Masiu.
To ensure that has been done by the three mobile network companies Telikom, Digicel and bmobile, a team from the National Information Communication Authority (Nicta) is visiting their data centres to conduct audits.
“It will take about two weeks to complete the auditing because all the data centres are in Port Moresby,” Masiu told The National.
The deadline for Sim card owners in urban centres to register was Monday, Aug 31.
The deadline for those in rural areas is Sept 30.
“By now, all the unregistered Sim cards in the urban centres should have been deregistered,” Masiu said.
“We gave enough time and the process has now come to an end. We gave extra month on the request of the Health Minister because of the Covid-19.
“Now our concentration should be on the rural areas.”
He urged those in rural areas to register their Sim cards at the nearest customer service centre before the end of the month.
Masiu welcomed the cooperation of the mobile network operators Digicel, Telikom and bmobile in following to Nicta’s directives.
“We thank them for complying with the directives from Nicta,” Masiu said.
